Lakers’ Plan B If They Can’t Get Jonas Valanciunas Via Trade

Lakers' Plan B If They Can't Get Jonas Valanciunas Via Trade

The Los Angeles Lakers are actively seeking to bolster their roster as they push for contention in the Western Conference. Their front office has identified key areas for improvement, focusing on defensive prowess in the paint, perimeter shooting, and backcourt athleticism. These priorities align with the team’s goal of supporting stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis with complementary talent.

Recent reports suggest the Lakers are exploring trade options to address these needs.

The team’s interest has reportedly extended to experienced centers currently playing for potential Play-in Tournament teams. Such a move could significantly impact the Lakers’ rebounding and interior defense, potentially elevating their standing in a competitive Western Conference landscape.

Lakers Eyeing Skilled Center in Trade Talks

The Lakers have made it no secret that they have serious interest in acquiring Jonas Valanciunas from the Washington Wizards. Their trade offer for him is a matter of public record.

That said, it is unclear whether L.A.’s proposed deal will ultimately be deemed good enough to accept.

For that reason, the front office is also contemplating a Plan B.

Bulls Veteran on LA’s Radar

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly interested in acquiring Nikola Vucevic from the Chicago Bulls. The 34-year-old center has drawn attention from several NBA teams due to his impressive performance and reasonable contract.

Vucevic is averaging 20.9 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game this season. His shooting efficiency is particularly noteworthy, with splits of .592/.480/.857. The big man has recorded 16 double-doubles and is shooting 48% from three-point range on 2.2 made triples per game.

The Lakers’ interest in Vucevic is understandable given his consistent production. His current numbers are comparable to his All-Star seasons in 2019 and 2021. Vucevic’s scoring ability was on full display recently when he dropped a season-high 39 points against the San Antonio Spurs.

Potential Trade Target for LA

Vucevic presents an attractive option for the Lakers as a versatile big man who can score from both inside and outside, while also contributing on the boards and defensively. The Bulls appear ready to move on from Vucevic and teammate Zach LaVine, with both players reportedly on the trading block for over a year.

Vucevic’s contract situation may be more palatable for potential suitors compared to LaVine’s. He’s in the second year of a three-year, $60 million deal, earning $20 million this season with a slight increase to $21.5 million in 2025-26.

The reported asking price for Vucevic is two second-round picks. The Lakers have five tradable second-round picks at their disposal, along with several players they could package in a deal.

Vucevic joins a growing list of centers linked to the Lakers in trade rumors. Other names include:

  • Valanciunas, obviously
  • Robert Williams III
  • Clint Capela

These centers could potentially complement LeBron James and Anthony Davis while addressing the Lakers’ frontcourt needs.

As the February trade deadline approaches, the Lakers’ interest in Vucevic may lead to further discussions. The former All-Star represents a solid target for a team looking to bolster its roster for a playoff push.
