The Los Angeles Lakers are eyeing potential roster upgrades, with Jonas Valanciunas emerging as a prime target.
This comes on the heels of drama surrounding LeBron James’ mysterious absence from the team, which head coach J.J. Redick seems to think may go on indefinitely.
The Washington Wizards center has caught the Lakers’ attention, sparking trade discussions that are expected to intensify after December 15 when Valanciunas becomes eligible for a move.
Lakers management is reportedly keen to address their frontcourt needs, particularly given recent injury concerns. Valanciunas, averaging 12.6 points and 8.1 rebounds this season, could provide valuable support to Anthony Davis and bolster the team’s interior presence.
Trade talks between the Lakers and Wizards have already begun, with Los Angeles considering a package centered around guard Gabe Vincent and draft picks. The Lakers may include additional players on veteran minimum contracts to create roster flexibility and stay under the second apron.
“According to those I’ve spoken to with knowledge of the situation, Washington and L.A. have already held preliminary talks about a Valanciunas deal, and the expectation is for those talks to ramp up once he can be traded,” NBA insider Anthony Irwin reported.
“The expectation is for the Lakers to offer Vincent and second-round pick compensation to the Wizards. They may also attach one of their veteran minimum contracts (Christian Wood, Cam Reddish, or Jaxson Hayes) in the deal to give themselves more room under the second apron and to open a roster spot.”
While the Lakers aim to secure Valanciunas quickly, they might face a steep price in second-round pick compensation. The team could opt to wait and see if the asking price decreases as the season progresses.
In a related development, the Lakers are exploring backup guard options. Markelle Fultz has emerged as a potential target if Vincent is included in a Valanciunas trade. Fultz, known for his athleticism and defensive skills, could address the Lakers’ need for perimeter defense despite concerns about his shooting.
Dennis Smith Jr. is another guard on the Lakers’ radar. His recent stint with the Brooklyn Nets showcased improved shooting and playmaking abilities, potentially making him a more well-rounded option than Fultz.
The Lakers’ pursuit of roster improvements reflects their determination to maximize their championship window with LeBron James and Anthony Davis. As trade discussions evolve, the team’s front office faces crucial decisions that could shape their playoff aspirations.
